Anatomy of a breakfast sandwich

It almost seems too easy.  But we often take things for granted, so I’m gonna roll with it.  Maybe everybody doesn’t know how to make a breakfast sandwich?  If by chance this is you, here ya go:

– Fry thin, ground sausage patty in a pan until crispy.
– Melt cheese on sausage patty for last couple minutes of cooking.
– Lightly toast english muffin.
– Place cooked sausage and toasted, open-faced muffin on a plate in a warm oven.
– Scramble an egg and add to finish off the sandwich

Other great substitutions include bacon, ham, sausage links, lettuce, mushrooms, tomatoes, cream cheese, steak, hamburger.. just about anything.  Meat or egg must be in there to officially qualify as breakfast at my house, but to each his own.

Happy new Floater

2008 is over. 2009 is here. Tacoma status report:

-The economy is in the basement
-Unemployment is way up
-Mortgage rates are down (approaching 5% again)
-Businesses big and small are failing like crazy
-Many houses are for sale, but few are actually selling
-All the late December snow has melted
-Avalanches have closed mountain passes and taken several lives already this season

Tacoma, what have we to look forward?

Tacoma Snow of December 2008

Most people are ready for a change in the weather pattern following a solid week of snow here in Tacoma. Nearly a foot of snow has fallen. The extra hassles, the crowds, heck even the dangers presented by the snow have worn down many a northwest driver, commuter and shopper. I spoke with a guy the other day who normally loves the snow; he can’t wait for the leftovers from this recent dump to clear completely. Seems the white Christmas concept goes over better with the masses when it is served to them for only a day or two. It is widely believed that the holidays are hectic enough without the added mayhem of snowy roads for a week thrown to the mix.

Once iconic, white Christmas an iconoclast becomes. Careful what you wish for!

This might have been the deepest, most sustained snow pack in the lowlands of Western Washington over the past decade. I personally had no issues or conflicts with the frigid temperatures or the heavy snowing. My dog loved it. The extra fluff in the mountains and the opportunity to ski Tacoma sufficed to keep me plenty occupied. To those who floundered at the mercy of Mother Nature, I offer my condolences.

Revolution. Reunion.

As everybody knows, the Facebook thing is completely bonkers. It is exercising viral domination on society like nothing I’ve seen prior, and along the way it is reshaping our culture. Email is a nifty idea. It provides a way to keep in touch with people you otherwise would not keep in touch with. Facebook takes this to an absolute extreme by putting you in touch with people you forgot you knew in the first place.

It used to take a class president hours to organize a mediocre reunion for one class back in the day. With the help of Facebook, a few girls from Lakewood have launched their own reunion. Not just for a graduating class at a particular school, but a sort of open invite to people from an entire town, from an entire era. The 80’s and 90’s era Lakewood kids have been summoned.

The Hub on Tacoma Ave near Stadium High School will be the location, and I am curious to see the extent of the actual turnout. It has been discussed that there will be many no-shows, but also that there will be plenty of attendees who don’t even participate in Facebook. At last count, the official “yes” RSVP’s totalled 26. I have this sneaking suspicion that there will be a lot more than 26 people there, but we’ll find out tonight. See you there!

Postage Paid Absentee Ballot Bullshit

I don’t mind that half of you are slack-ass lumps o’ standing-in-line-weary goo… but do I really have to pay for your postage? Really?? In theory, you are supposed to be retired or on vacation during the election to vote absentee – in both cases you either have enough time to make it to the voting booth, or enough money to PAY YOUR OWN DAMN POSTAGE. I understand the medical exceptions, obviously, but for everyone else, I say WTF?

If you are so important that you can’t get out to vote in person for an hour or two once every four years, is it really too much to have to pick up your own convenience tab of $1 (or whatever postage would be for oversized letters). And on the other hand, it’s only $1, right? No big deal? Until you add it up nationwide and put them all on one tab and hand it to the government to pay. Millions and millions.

A friend just told me that some people won’t vote because they can’t find a stamp. Banks, grocery stores, mini-marts… just a few examples of places other than the dreaded post office to acquire stamps these days.
