Tacoma Snow of December 2008

Most people are ready for a change in the weather pattern following a solid week of snow here in Tacoma. Nearly a foot of snow has fallen. The extra hassles, the crowds, heck even the dangers presented by the snow have worn down many a northwest driver, commuter and shopper. I spoke with a guy the other day who normally loves the snow; he can’t wait for the leftovers from this recent dump to clear completely. Seems the white Christmas concept goes over better with the masses when it is served to them for only a day or two. It is widely believed that the holidays are hectic enough without the added mayhem of snowy roads for a week thrown to the mix.

Once iconic, white Christmas an iconoclast becomes. Careful what you wish for!

This might have been the deepest, most sustained snow pack in the lowlands of Western Washington over the past decade. I personally had no issues or conflicts with the frigid temperatures or the heavy snowing. My dog loved it. The extra fluff in the mountains and the opportunity to ski Tacoma sufficed to keep me plenty occupied. To those who floundered at the mercy of Mother Nature, I offer my condolences.

  1. AP: Do you ever throw on your skis and ride the hills in your neighborhood when you get dumped on as you have this last week? Or is The Man too quick to clear the streets? Just wondering.

  2. I’m green with envy. I’m sure you heard about our record snowfall here in Vegas a couple weeks ago. It was glorious albeit short lived. I frolicked in it like a little girl. Unfortunately there are no hills to be had in this desert.

  3. Yes, I saw snow in Vega$ on the news. That must have really thrown some people for a loop down there. The citizens of Tacoma had a hard enough time, but at least a lot of people here have all-wheel or 4-wheel drive. Were there 23498234734 car pileups on your freeways?

When the snow kept falling, and the news said it was going to stay cold, I too transformed into a schoolgirl. I didn’t dress like a girl, though, so it was easy to keep other people from knowing what I’d become.

All the snow is gone now, and I am sad, just like a little girl. Again. I’ve come full circle.

  4. Sure did. People were either driving 30mph or like there wasn’t any snow on the ground at all; either way it made for a sketchy drive home.

I wanted to dress like a schoolgirl while frolicking so everyone would know just how I felt, but I’m just too big for Chloe’s clothes.

    Yes, that happens.
