cost-effective kayaks

Newbies are much better off with affordable, durable, plastic boats. You won't freak out when you scratch one of these on rocks or barnacles and they are stable in the water. You can focus on what you are doing and enjoy yourself. You'll be safest when you aren't worried about running into things and you can pull right up on shore. I'm happy with my Old Town Loon 12' plastic kayaks and you can't beat the price of this type of kayak.

Another thing to keep in mind: fiberglass and plastic boats are for sissies. You want deluxe? Know how to work with your hands a little bit? Check out these incredible, DIY wooden Pygmy Kayaks (HQ'd in Port Townsend, WA).
